For Chinese black tea, the gold refers to the color of the end product, high quality tea will be gold or gold tipped. They tend to be the more complex and sweet teas.

A crisp, clean and semi-exotic Colombian! Great at light to medium roasts but works light to dark. Light roasts themselves are fuller bodied and pull good balance between a sweet citric/floral upfront and a semi-sweet rustic chocolate undertone, hints of nuttiness in the aftertaste. Great mouthfeel at the lighter roasts and clean tastes. Medium roasts turn the cup more chocolaty and robust. A hint of buzzy acidity in the medium roast range but hardly citric, great depth to the darker toned cup. Would consider it a smooth and rich cup until one hits the darker roast points. Dark roasts are smoky and roasty but very chocolaty and semi-sweet.

A wonderful very clean and smooth, sweet edged Colombian. Great from light to dark, our favorite was a nice medium roast, pulled the best balance between light and dark tones and was super easy to drink. A very chug-able cup. A little hint of nuttiness showing its Colombian roots, but all in all the cup leans more towards chocolate like, a hint of a soft fruit tone at the light to medium roasts which adds good sweetness without being too acidic. Good body and fairly low acidity. Darker roasts will get more robust and semi-sweet, but if looking for strong and dark, we would look at the other Colombians. A wonderful daily drinking cup!

Colombian Premium Narino – Buesaco Sareni – Washed Processed Top Lot
We thought it best within the light to medium roast levels. Jazzy citric acidity, a little floral some would say, a hint of soft fruit providing a sweet edge along with some wonderful darker toned balance, on the walnut/almond side. Light roasts themselves will be a bit citric, the cup is very clean and handles the roast level well, but needs a longer setup and a tongue that doesn’t mind a bit of acidity. Medium roasts are great daily drinkers and promote a little hint of caramel in the nuttier cup profile, retains just a pinch of citric acidity upfront but it really helps with the depth of flavors. Good body with a smooth mouthfeel. Dark roasts were equally as tasty but it loses the cool crisp citric, and soft fruit, that shows at lighter roasts. Full bodied with stronger nutty and chocolate like tones, a bit of roastiness but it compliments the cup nicely.

A lovely, crisp, and clean, not overly fruity natural processed. We thought it best right around the medium roast ballpark but will make fans lighter or darker depending on your personal taste preference. Lighter roasting is a bit higher acidity, lemony and floral with some grape skin like fruitiness coming through. A bit more herbal spice right at first crack, needs a longer setup time to shine but will provide delicate chocolaty notes with much wilder acidity and fruity tones. Medium roasts were tasty without the wait! Balanced, tasty, and clean after 24 hours. A pronounced chocolaty factor, medium bodied, hints of crisp acidity backed with a little soft fruit tone and spice. Wonderfully smooth and delicate for a Congo coffee. Dark roasts were tasty right off the bat as well, roasty and stronger but with a sweeter then average edge. To see this cup shine, light to medium roasts are the way to go! Medium acidity, lighter bodied, delicate, sweet cup with strong red fruit tones (strawberry like). Hints of citric and floral jump right out with the fruitiness. Pulls some balance with a little nutty/tea like tones at lighter roasts giving it some awesome depth. Holds up well as one pushes towards second crack, turns the nutty/herbal tones into a rich chocolaty factor with fruity highlights. A bit rougher of a dark tone close to the dark roast mark, touching or into second crack, but everyone still liked it. Touching or into second crack gets a bit bitter with more of an oaky barrel aged tone than sweet red fruit.

A very sweet and fruit forward bean. Clean cup, medium to full bodied with higher acidity. Light to medium roasts are where this bean will shine. Being a brighter natural processed it has some great sweetness and a stronger winy/citric and red fruit tone upfront, which balance with classic Costa nutty and slightly chocolate like darker tones. A fun bean to play with roast level: tip the scales either lighter and fruitier or darker toned nutty/chocolate like. Very light roasts (with a longer setup) can introduce a little toasted grainy note giving a comparable to jellied toast like tastes, but with a lemony citric kicker. Medium roasts build great body and mouthfeel, cut out much of the citric but still overlays the nutty & chocolate like tones with a wonderful and sweet fruitiness. Darker roasts are strong and have a bit of bittersweet contrast. It keeps the sweetness and will still be slightly fruity, but contrasts with stronger bakers chocolate (slightly bitter) like tones with some roasty/smoky accents.

A very nice medium to dark roast decaf. Medium roasts are a much smoother cup, a little sweet edge, nutty, with a touch of chocolate. Has a little floral overtone that makes it a bit interesting. Fuller bodied with a richer chocolate tone closer to 2nd crack. Some smokiness at second crack or into but retains its smooth and rich character. Decaf Mexican is always one of my favorite beans to get a nice and strong chocolaty note in the decafs. Best from the lighter side of a medium roast to as dark as you want to go. A bit cleaner tasting but slightly less fruity than previous seasons. Lighter roasting presents some nice honey processed features: citric, floral, soft fruit with an almost oak/peat like finish, sweet & complex but does risk some underdeveloped tones if you nail it a little too light. Medium roasts were our favorite, still balanced and complex but will develop the traditional chocolate and smoky tones for which Dominican coffees are known for – to balance out those more exotic fruity and citric tones. On the lighter roast spectrum there is a little jazzy citric note that presents the cup a little sweeter, on the darker roast spectrums it will have some roasty and smoky notes that we found quite pleasant.

A very cool, very exotic cup of coffee. One can tell this is a slow dry natural processed coffee with its strong ripe red fruit tones upfront. Lighter roasting presents a ton of floral and fruit with an almost oak/peat boozy finish, very sweet with just a ton going on but does risk some underdeveloped tones with its two-toned roasting. Medium roasts were our favorite, still plenty wild but develop enough of the chocolate and smoky tones – which most Dominican coffees are known for – to balance all those more exotic fruity and citric tones. Darker roasts will burn out most of what distinguishes this cup, the washed processed handles those roast level much better; interesting and still exotic but strong and edgy, it will retain some fruity factor with very strong and less sweet, smoky, tobacco and bakers chocolate type notes.

Best served at the light to medium roast levels; jasmine aromatics with wild more lemon/floral acidity, balancing with a rustic chocolate and tea like spiced undertone. There is a little hint of fruit in the cup but its pretty faint, gives the cup great sweetness and depth of flavor. Reminiscent of a Yemen or Harrar coffee. Lighter roasts will have some citric acidity and stronger floral tones balanced with a faint tea like chocolaty undertone, a little fruit note pops out as the cup cools. Medium roasts really mellow out the acidity and promote the chocolaty cup profile, adds a little jazzy spice note in the aftertaste. A very smooth, balanced cup with exotic highlights. Fantastic example of an Ethiopian Natural. Keep this one light to medium roasted. Too dark and the awesome crisp and clean fruit/floral notes disappear. A mellow cup on the sweeter side with nice darker fruit tones popping right out. The cool natural tones balance with a tea like spice note, a sign of its roots, Yirgs are known for their more tea like dark tones. Many would call it a chocolaty undertone with a jazzy spice note but we like the tea reference and most will agree. A bit more delicate of a cup with a little lower acidity. Depending on what you like this can be a real perk, fruity and sweet without risking high acidity or overly sour tones at the lighter roast points. A little easy to roast out the fruitiness, so don’t let it get too dark!

A lovely coffee from light to dark with a medium roast being our favorite, a staple offering on our list, great stuff every year. This year the cup is a little less acidic and fuller bodied, small hints of fruit at lighter roasts but more about the chocolate and spice notes. Light roasts are clean with a little citric upfront, a small hint of a sweet berry note comingling with an almond like nuttiness and a bit of tea like spice in the aftertaste. Medium roasts brought a fuller body and more chocolate like tones, lower acidity, uncovered a bit of floral upfront, lingering spice in the aftertaste. Darker roasts complimented the cup, a little more rough and tumble but a strong chocolate and spice profile many will love, good for cold brew or espresso.

Roast capacity for the Fresh Roast SR540 is slightly more than 4 ounces: 120 grams to be exact, or just like previous models, 4 scoops using the included measuring spoon.
This new coffee roaster model has an improved control panel. There are now nine levels of heat adjustment compared to the previously limited Low, Medium, and High settings. The fan also has nine levels of adjustment. All adjustments are made by pressing the knob and turning to change heat, fan, and time settings. It also features a new real-time air temperature measurement. A quick turn of the knob to the right will display current temperature.

Increases the body and smoothness, but will reduce the depth of flavors a bit. If looking to impress, light roasts are where it shines. For daily drinking, medium roasts are the way to go. Being a high rated bean, it is very clean at lighter roasts, which we thought presented it best, but found darker roast points with its mix of stronger malty dark tones with a pinch of fruit in the aftertaste, quite tasty as well. Light roasts are delicate, sweet and clean. Will have a little citric crispness upfront, a bit of fruitiness and some lovely malty contrast. A fruit note for sure, but not overly fermented like many, a bean for every coffee fan.
