A very nice and clean Costa. Lighter roasts will show that classic Costa sweet floral acidity, a little bit on the lemony side balanced with a little dry nutty/chocolate undertone. As the roasting pushes more into the medium category, the cup develops a bit more body and reduced acidity levels giving a much smoother mouthfeel and more defined chocolaty factor. Creates a wonderful balance of tones. A little lighter floral, a little chocolaty/nutty, very pleasant drinker. Darker roasts hold up nicely as well, turn the cup more stronger and more bakers chocolate like, the roasty notes from darker roasting do compliment the cup. A very nice co-op production Tarrazu that follows the classic Costa terroir, floral acidity versus nutty and chocolaty tones. Best at medium to dark roasts, a lovely daily drinker. A good balance of flavors that can accommodate anyone’s personal tastes, dependent on roast level. Lighter roasts are brighter, sweeter and more floral, balanced with hints of dryer, nutty undertones. Medium roasts had the best balance, smooth with a slight chocolaty edge and pronounced nuttiness in the aftertaste, just a hint of crispness to the cup. Dark roasts turn fuller bodied and semi-sweet, accentuating the nutty and chocolate tones even more but will lose its floral and crisp sweeter edge.

A great clean decaf coffee! Good from light to dark. Lighter roasting will show a little lemony crispness, rare for a decaf. Sweeter edged with a little herbal chocolate contrast. Medium roasts cut out most of the lemony crispness and rid the cup of its herbal edge. Smooth and rich, medium bodied, with a more pronounced chocolate tone; a bit floral and sweet in the aromatics, adds to the drinking experience but doesn’t come through in the tastes. A very nice light to dark roast decaf. Lighter roasts are sweeter and more delicate, a little unique spice with a bit of nuttiness and just a pinch of floral. Medium roasts are a smoother cup, a little sweet edge, nutty, with a touch of chocolate. Has a little floral overtone that makes it a bit interesting. Fuller bodied with a richer chocolate tone closer to 2nd crack. Some smokiness at second crack or into but retains its smooth and rich character. Decaf Mexican is always one of my favorite beans to get a nice and strong chocolaty note in the decafs. Lower acidity and fuller bodied, pretty hefty in its semi sweet bakers chocolate tone at fuller roasts.

Best from the lighter side of a medium roast to as dark as you want to go. A bit cleaner tasting but slightly less fruity than previous seasons. Lighter roasting presents some nice honey processed features: citric, floral, soft fruit with an almost oak/peat like finish, sweet & complex but does risk some underdeveloped tones if you nail it a little too light. Medium roasts were our favorite, still balanced and complex but will develop the traditional chocolate and smoky tones for which Dominican coffees are known for – to balance out those more exotic fruity and citric tones. Stone and darker fruit, citrus & floral, and spiced chocolate tones are the main flavors one can see in this cup, either accentuated or muted depending on roast level. Nice jammy body will be seen in the medium to borderline dark roast mark. Very dependent on roast – lighter roasting gives much more of the citrus, red-fruit with just a hint of a spicy chocolaty factor, a much dryer finish. Darker roasts produce much more of a bakers chocolate cup with a hint of a strawberry like fruit note and good sweetness, far less acidic. A very enjoyable cup from light to dark.

Crisp, clean and exotic. Great aromatics: nothing like grinding a fresh Ethiopian with its floral, jasmine and spice notes to tickle your nose. Lighter roasts are filled with new crop acidity and floral notes, mostly citric but a little peachy soft fruit tone can be found. The balance of the cup comes from a semi-tea-like chocolate factor. I tend to think of it as chocolate spice notes but many tongues can pick up a little black tea note. Medium roasts have just a pinch of citric acidic, builds a thicker body and brings forth more of the chocolaty cup profile, reducing the acidity slightly. Darker roasts are always tasty for those who like fuller roasts. This is how they would traditionally serve these beans in Ethiopia. The Fresh Roast SR540 is the next generation in the SR family, a solid step forward on the most popular home coffee roaster. Easy to use, more versatile in its settings and a pinch larger batch size than its predecessor the Fresh Roast SR500.
Check out the new SR 540 Extension Tube, a great new accessory! Moves the coffee better; allowing for an increased batch size and further flexibility in the settings!
Roast capacity for the Fresh Roast SR540 is slightly more than 4 ounces: 120 grams to be exact, or just like previous models, 4 scoops using the included measuring spoon.
This new coffee roaster model has an improved control panel. There are now nine levels of heat adjustment compared to the previously limited Low, Medium, and High settings. The fan also has nine levels of adjustment. All adjustments are made by pressing the knob and turning to change heat, fan, and time settings. It also features a new real-time air temperature measurement. A quick turn of the knob to the right will display current temperature.

Great example of classic Guatemalan coffee. Best in the medium roast ballpark. Clean, rich & sweet cup; medium bodied with a little new crop winy acidity upfront. Lovely nutty & malty darker tones to balance the brightness. Hints of a fruitiness as the cup cools with “before 2nd crack” roast levels. Will handle lighter or darker roasts as well. Light roasts will be brighter, a bit more lemony with the malty tones just peeking out, a sweeter edge to lighter roasts but not as balanced nor malty. Darker roasts promote the strong malt tones, accentuating the mouthfeel and semi-sweet malt tones, a smoky edge.

A solid cup from light to dark, but for most drinking, a medium roast will be the way to go. Sweet with just a pinch of citric upfront, medium bodied, good mouthfeel, just a pinch of fruitiness and ends with a nice malty undertone. Lighter roast get a bit brighter and slightly more fruity but can risk a little grassy, medium roasts present great balance to the flavors and was very easy drinking, darker roasts retain a lot of sweetness and hefty malty tones, but will get pretty roasty/smoky. If drinking for drip/pour-over, medium roasts are where to go. If using for blending, espresso or cold brew, light or dark roasts can produce some really tasty results.

A little higher acidity than average, balanced with some developing malt like tones. A bit acidic light roasted but easy to enjoy if you classically like lighter roasts. Blooms into a more traditional Guat. chocolaty cup as you push into the medium to dark roast levels. The darker you go the less winy and acidic the cup will taste. Around a medium roast, the perceived acidity drops and creates a rich, fuller bodied, chocolaty cup with a smooth and sweet edge. A hint of floral mixing it to keep it crisp. Great cup from light to dark roasts. We liked it best on the lighter side of a medium roast, good shot at a hint of caramel (sweet and nutty) in the cup. Hints of citric acidity comingle with a nutty/caramel like tone with a sweet edge, reminiscent of a nice Honduran coffee. Clean cup, a bit brighter with a pinch of soft fruit at the lighter roasts, the contrasting nuttiness can come off a bit dry but smooths out with a longer setup. Much more chocolaty at the darker roasts with a noticeable increase in the body of the cup, still very sweet with a bit of roasty nuttiness in the aftertaste.

Can be roasted from light to dark but our favorite was a nice medium roast. Lighter roasts: the acidity & floral tones are accentuated and will be the first tastes your tongue will notice, a pinch of an island fruit tone but pretty faint, balances with a little green-tea, chocolate & spice dark tone. From a medium roast on, the acidity is very gentle and balanced with a smooth to rough chocolaty cup profile, milk chocolate before 2nd crack, bakers chocolate and smoky into 2nd crack. Medium bodied and lower acidity, these beans as well as other Kona’s are mild cups comparatively to many other origins, be in for a delicate and tasty cup with layers of goodness.
