New 2023 top lot! This is one of the highest rated lots that has come through our doors. A wonderful treat for you light roast Kenya fans!

The Gichathaini factory is one of three washing stations that comprise the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society (F.C.S.), which is in the Mathira West district of Nyeri. The factory itself is owned by the farmers who deliver their cherries here: There are about 1,045 registered members and 770 active members who utilize the mill and, subsequently, are able to make elective decisions regarding factory representation and management. The factory is located about 6 kilometers from Karatina town, and the conditions in the area are typically ideal for coffee: abundant rainfall, reliable average temperatures, fertile soil, and fresh water from the Ragati river.

Coffee is picked and delivered ripe to the factory, where it is sorted before being depulped the same day as delivery. It is fermented overnight, washed using clean Ragati river water, and then moved to the drying beds. The water used in the washing process is recirculated for conservation purposes, and moved to soak pits away from the fresh-water sources to prevent contamination.

When it hits its proper dry time and moisture content, it was taken to Dorman’s right outside of Nairobi for processing, milling & screening. Dorman’s has some of the best coffee processing equipment in the world. Which definitely helps create some of the best lots on the block.

Tasting Notes: Tasty from light to dark; clean, rich and on the brighter side. Although still considered a higher acidity, stronger cup, this offering is mellower than some, which is part of the high rating. Incredibly clean, balanced and defined at very light roasts.

Lighter roasts are lemony and floral with a pinch of soft fruit and a potent darker herbal tone in the aftertaste. A bit of nutty/caramel if you nail the roast right with a little setup.

Medium roasts are smooth and creamier, still noticeably acidic but more in the background. Good body to the cup with rich semi-sweet chocolate tones that fade a bit into a green tea like spice. Detected a hint of soft fruit as the cup cooled similar to lighter roast points, but not as punchy.

Dark roast are a very dark toned cup, low acidity with strong semi-sweet smoky & malty tones. A bit of herbal can still be found but more muted than the light-medium roast levels.

Roasting Notes: To see this cup shine, keep it light roasted! An easy to roast bean, even roasting with medium to low chaff. Does have some acidity, so if you drink it within 12-24 hours after roasting, a definite noticeable lemony sour tone upfront. With some extra setup it becomes very smooth and less soury at those lighter roast points.
