Of all the Burundi coffee we evaluated this year, this green coffee was the brightest. If zesty/fruity acidity is something you love in coffee, this is the lot for you! Full of citric tones, lemon and lime. Very complex cup, hits you after that first sip: there’s a good amount of sugar browning in the flavor, from caramel to brown sugar the sweetness is rich, almost molasses-like. We picked up some dried fruit: raisin, dried mango, dates, and prunes. There’s some black or oolong tea-type flavors, a uniquely Burundian flavor note in coffee, and plenty of hints at spice and florality including rose, clove, and chamomile.But don’t expect this coffee to rely solely on that tiny citric slice of the flavor wheel to wow you. Its complexity hits you after that first sip: there’s a good amount of sugar browning in the flavor, from caramel to brown sugar the sweetness is rich, almost molasses-like. We picked up some dried fruit, as well, in the same sensory neighborhood: raisin, dried mango, dates, and prunes. There’s some black or oolong tea-type flavors, a uniquely Burundian flavor note in coffee, and plenty of hints at spice and florality including rose, clove, and chamomile.

A lovely coffee; smooth and clean cup. A bit stronger and more potent classic African spice tone. Reminds me of a Kenyan but milder. Lighter roasts show some small hints of a lemony acidity, a little soft fruit tone accompanied with some herbal spice and chocolate tones, a bit exotic but balanced. Light roast African fans will find some joy here but for most, pushing the beans into a medium roast will be preferred. Mellows the spice tones creating a much smoother lower acidity cup with a sweet edge. One can still get the spice complexities especially in the aftertaste or as the cup cools but smooth, rich and not too exotic, a lovely roast point for a daily drinker. A bit of lemony floral acidity upfront with a hint of soft fruit, balancing with a potent semi-sweet chocolate undertone with strong spice. Small hints of an herbal/tea like tone in the aftertaste letting you know its an African coffee. A bit sizzling but holds lighter roasts nicely. Smoother, slightly less spice notes and more chocolaty factor at a medium roast, much heftier into the darker roast, turning it into a strong and fuller bodied cup. Hints of winy and lemony acidity comingle with tart red fruit tones, almost like an sweet red apple skin and balance with a bit of a chocolaty undertone. Not much for the traditionally African herbal spice in the cup but you may find hints in the aftertaste. Medium roasts get much more chocolaty and smooth, retains the red fruit tone nicely, a very easy to drink cup. Darker roasts pick up some stronger roasty tones, compliments the more chocolaty aspects of the cup, especially as it cools, the fruitiness will jump right out even at darker roast points.

Dark roasts are strong and semi-sweet with a full body, complimenting roasty and smoky tones. Anywhere in the middle adds some cool & exotic soft fruit tones with hints of a nutty caramel sweetness. We couldn’t find a roast we didn’t like with these beans, if you roast lighter, just make sure you do not mind a little stronger citric component.

A wonderful example of a fruity natural! Light to medium roasts are where this cup will shine. Hints of lemony floral acidity comingle with sweet red fruit tones, balancing with an herbal chocolate like undertone. Can be a little sharp at traditional light roasts, but it will be the sweetest and fruitiest roast point. Medium roasts get much more chocolaty and smooth, bringing the darker tones to the foreground, it will retain the red fruit tone nicely still, lingers a bit in the aftertaste. Darker roasts pick up some stronger roasty tones, compliments the more chocolate and spice aspects of the cup, especially as it cools, the fruitiness will jump right out even at darker roast points.

A lovely coffee from light to dark. Your personal tastes will dictate what level to roast these beans to, if in doubt, a nice medium roast provides the best balance and depth of flavors. Light roasts will have a lemony citric crispness balancing with a sweet edged nutty/caramel/chocolate/spice like undertone. Takes a longer setup for lighter roasts to shine but for those who like sweetness and brighter notes in coffee will enjoy the lighter roast levels. Medium roasts build the darker tones and mute a bunch of the citric, a chocolaty cup with a burnt sugar kick, just a pinch of crisp citric that will disappear as the coffee sets up. Hints of nuttiness and spice pop out more one can see a little hint of caramel. Darker roasts turn the cup more into a semi-sweet chocolate bomb with a little spice in the aftertaste, much flatter but very tasty with a splash of milk or for espresso/cold-brew.
