Three different processing methods from Uganda

A pound each of:

Uganda Org. Mbale Mountain Harvest – Washed Processed

Mount Elgon is a massive peak split nearly in two by the border of Uganda and Kenya. The “mountain” itself, now an extinct shield volcano, is more an enormous expanse of successive plateaus that float dramatically above the surrounding valley floor. It is also home to a dense patchwork of farming communities growing some of the best organic coffee in Africa.   Mountain Harvest is a very young and big-thinking group, first established in 2017. The company is dedicated to long-term economic and environmental sustainability for smallholders on Mt. Elgon.

These farmers are Uganda’s highest and most diversified coffee growers with incredible quality potential thanks to the climate, soil fertility, and a longstanding culture of land stewardship, but who historically struggle to meet specialty standards by processing coffee in tiny amounts on homemade equipment.    In an effort to raise the economic standard in remote coffee-growing Elgon communities, Mountain Harvest began as an impact investing project underwritten by Lutheran World Relief (LWR). It has expanded in just a few years to include farmer education and training, central processing infrastructure, storage facilities throughout the region, detailed quality control, and international marketing.

Tasting Notes: Great from light to dark. Fuller bodied and very chocolaty, potent cup mostly with a bakers chocolate like tones. Medium to low acidity the cup does pulls balance with stronger floral acidity and a grape-skin like fruit tones. Reminiscent of a Kenya or Rwanda coffee, strong floral versus strong chocolate tones with some spice notes to top it off. For a chocolate bomb cup make sure to get it a bit darker roasted. A great cup for cold brew or espresso but will find fans as drip or pour-over assuming you like the darker roast points and strong coffee.

Roasting Notes: Darkens up a bit quickly so don’t let it trick you, will look a shade darker than it is. Has some very fresh acidity upfront at the light to medium roasts that many African fans will love, but if you like lower acidity cups, make sure to take it a bit darker. Even roasting with medium to low chaff.

Uganda Org. Mbale Mountain Harvest- Honey Process

Tasting Notes: Clean & sweet, with some awesome floral and fruity characteristics. Best server at the light to medium roast points. Although not as fruity as the natural processed, one will get some overlying stone fruit (red) tones in this cup accompanied with a little lemony citric. Being a Uganda, the cup will also have some nice darker tone balance, definitely on the chocolaty side with some classic African spice, slight nuttiness at the light roasts. Although it has some spice, this cup is much more delicate than say a Kenyan coffee. Not punchy and overall, a smooth, sweet edged exotic cup.

Roasting Notes: A bit higher chaff and will roast a bit two toned, on par for a nice honey processed. Make sure it gets a little development past first crack to see it shine. Medium roasts are well balanced and what we thought was the best roast point. Works darker as well, retains a little fruity factor combined with a very strong bakers chocolate and smoky spice cup profile.

Uganda Org. Zombo White Nile Natural Processed

This is a prime example of an exotic fruity natural, some will absolutely love this cup but it will also be too much for others. The flavor diversity of this cup is astonishing to most and very tailor-able via roast level.

Uganda coffee in general are very smooth and clean African coffees, less spicy and herbal than many of their neighbors with just a pinch less acidity than Kenyans. Much more straight chocolaty notes like Central or South American coffees which makes a great platform for delivering natural processed coffees.

Tasting Notes: Crisp, clean and exotic. Medium body with medium acidity, a good rounded cup. Light to medium roasts; The first tones to hit you will be a little bit of lemony citrus that quickly fades into some lovely red fruit notes – a little reminiscent of tart cherry but has some classic stone fruit in the cup as well. The lighter tones are balanced with a nice and clean chocolaty factor without too much of that classic African herbal note. Aromatics that will make your mouth water. Dark roasts are not really recommended, turn a bit bittersweet and kill the fruit forward aspects of the cup.

Roasting Notes: Keep these beans in the light to medium roast points to see them shine. Real light roasts will be pretty high in acidity, enough to cover up a little of the fruitiness of the cup. Medium roasts are well balanced and what we thought was the best roast point. Dark roasts are not recommended. These beans do have a little higher chaff content.
