Myanmar – Ywangan Small Holders – Catuai Natural Processed

Regular Price $8.89/lb
Best in the light to medium roast levels. Tasty natural processed beans but taste wise reminds me more of the washed processed offering. Not a fruit bomb but will show a little fruitiness as the cup cools.  Lighter roasts will have a bit of acidity upfront, lemony floral tones will be the first to hit the tongue along with a sweet nuttiness that fades into the classic African herbal/spice note. Medium roasts are where we thought it shined, just a small hint of citric/floral sweetness upfront balanced with a spicy rustic chocolate note (similar to Indian coffee). With the addition of a little orange like sparkle as the cup cools. Darker roasts get more like a traditional Asian coffee with strong bakers chocolate and smoky tones, a hefty cup with very low acidity.

Description

Located in the Middle Eastern region of Myanmar, Ywangan is one of two townships located in Taunggyi District, Shan State. Both Ywangan and Pindaya Townships are a part of the Danu Self Administered Zone, Which belongs to the Dani ethnic group and stipulated by the 2008 constitution of Myanmar.
Out of 125 villages in Ywangan Township, around 90 are engaged in coffee plantations with 7300 acres of coffee farms. Ywangan began growing coffee in the early 1980s as a substitute crop for poppy. Farmers here typically own a quarter to 3 acres, on which they intercrop a few varieties of Arabica coffee with crops such as avocado, jackfruit, jengkol beans, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, banana, tea or shady macadamia trees.
Coffee helped to develop the region in recent years, especially with the emergence of Myanmar in the international coffee market. Nowadays, farmers have access to more fair market prices, inside the country and overseas, for their cherries and green beans. In recent years more collectives and processing centers have opened in the region.

Roasting Notes:
Fairly easy to roast – a bit higher chaff but a lovely clean natural. Even roasting and a decent cup from light to dark. Shines at the lighter roast points but there were no roast points to avoid. Setup can reduce the citric and floral tones at lighter roasts, so for some, waiting 3-5 days before drinking could be a perk. We loved it after 24 hours of resting.
