Rwanda Cyato – Abadatezuka COOP – Gatebe Natural Processed
A stellar new-wave coffee; highly rated and exotic. Full of citric, floral and fruit tones. We thought best served in the light to medium roast range. Higher acidity, fuller bodied with great depth to the flavors. Lighter roasts are a bit sizzling but also the most complex tasting; stronger citric/floral acidity comingle with a very sweet red fruit tone upfront, balancing with just a pinch of the classic Rwanda darker tones of herbal, spice and chocolate. Takes a little longer setup to bring out the small exotic hints in the tastes. Medium roasts build a much creamier cup profile, just a hint of crisp floral upfront that fades into a strawberry like fruitiness, balanced with strong dark semi-sweet dark chocolate like tone. Dark roasts themselves are still very lively cups but can come off a bit sour/bitter comparatively. They are fuller bodied accentuating the robust chocolate and spice notes but not a delicate cup like the light-medium roasts.

A wonderful light to medium roast coffee. Leans a bit more towards a washed processed coffee than natural. A very clean, sweet and delicate cup with medium to low acidity: chocolate, spice, tea and fruit tones comingle nicely at the different roast levels. Lighter roasts show just a small pinch of citric and fruit comingling with complex tea like undertones, a fuller body and sweeter edge. Medium roasts mute much of the tea like spice turning the cup more chocolaty and semi-sweet, hints of fruit as the cup cools but hardly noticeable while hot. Darker roasts are more of a semi-sweet chocolate bomb, could be a bit much without a splash of milk but works wonderfully for espresso or cold brew at the fuller roast levels.

Stand up beans good from light to dark, but we thought best at the fuller roast levels. Medium to full bodied, lower acidity, clean and chocolaty with some nice fruity overtones. Lighter roasts will have a little citric/floral tone with a sweet and herbal edge, a hint of soft fruit. Medium roasts get much more chocolaty and less herbal providing a balanced cup, works nicely for all taste buds; smooth and rich. At the medium roasts one will see a more gentle cup with good body, a little sweeter edge, hints of acidity and stronger chocolaty spice. Darker roasts get much fuller bodied and bring out the very strong bakers chocolate edge balancing nicely with classic African spice note and complimenting roasty/smoky tones. A nice and clean taste, good from light to dark. Mostly these beans will appeal to medium-dark roast fans but being an exceptionally clean cup, it has some lovely balance and is quite tasty at lighter roasts. Similar to its Indonesian cousins (except washed processed), it gets real hefty into the dark roasts promoting smoky and chocolaty tones with stronger spice notes. A nice clean, balanced cup, medium bodied and lower acidity for an African. Best from a medium to dark roast. Although lower acidity, lighter roasts will still be a little citric and floral balanced with a rustic bakers chocolaty undertone. Medium roasts mute up the acidity and leave a little hint of a floral, developing a little soft fruit tone mixing with a smoother but still semi-sweet chocolate darker tones. Darker roasts themselves pick up some nice complimentary roasty & smoky tones mixing with a stronger bakers chocolate cup profile.

Best at the light to medium roast level. Good bit of citrus and red fruit upfront balanced with a thicker chocolate and spice note. Light roasts get a very jazzy stronger citric tone, with just a hint of a dark tone balance. Floral and sweet edged, with an emphasis on the fruitiness of the cup. Medium roasting brings the best of both worlds, some soft fruit, some chocolate and spice: medium to full bodied and far less sharp than the lighter roasts, but also a bit less fruity. More of a chocolaty cup with fruity highlights. Dark roasts get even fuller bodied but burn out some sweetness, taste like semi-sweet chocolate on the roasty/smoky side, thick with a bit of spice in the aftertaste. A hint of fruitiness as the cup cools but hard to tell its natural processed roots at darker roasts.

A wonderful season for the Zambia washed. Good clean cup profile making it pretty tasty from light to dark roasts. We found the lighter side of a medium roast to be our favorite. Fuller bodied cup with a sweet lemony crispness balanced with a chocolaty dark tone, hints of nuttiness and spice in the aftertaste. Similar to a Rwanda/Burundi/Kenya but with a bit more body and less herbal spice. Lighter roasts accentuate the brighter more floral/fruity tones, a bit more showy of a cup with its brighter characteristics but not as chuggable, can pull a little herbal balance. If you cannot tolerate a bit of citric crispness, darker roasts are the way to go, mutes up most of the brighter cup features presenting a real big bodied, smoky, complex and very dark toned cup of coffee.Price: $8.79/lb - 7.59/lbPrice: $8.79
