Congo Kivu 3 Magage A Goma Washed

$5.89

A unique African offering. Reminds me of an Indonesian Sulawesi almost more than other African coffees. Low acidity and full-bodied. It has a very sweet versus earthy contrast. The earthy is more of a mushroom herbal-like tone that balances well with a strong bakers chocolate undertone. As the cup cools, a little pleasant nuttiness comes out in the aftertaste.

I have always had a fascination with the Congo – perhaps from a movie I watched as a child. What a different place and culture – often seen in a dark light, coffee from there often serves as a beacon of light in a troubled place.

The taste of this coffee is about as unique and exotic as my thoughts on the Congo itself – tasty but pretty different.

Congo Kivu Magage Goma is sourced from a 170-acre estate located along the western edge of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The estate forms an important protective buffer for the Virunga National Park, Africa’s first national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was established in 1925 to protect the population of mountain gorillas. Baraka Magage, a successful businessman in the nearby city Goma, decided to return to the village where he was born and raised to purchase an abandoned coffee farm. Over the last four years, Mr. Magage has dedicated much of his efforts to renovate the estate with new coffee plants. He has given surplus seedling from his nursery to his neighbors hoping they will also succeed in their renovation efforts. Mr. Magage hopes to build a washing station in the coming year.

Tasting Notes:

Roasting Notes:
A bit of a darker roast coffee for you strong coffee fans. Around 2nd crack as dark as you want to go.
