Description
A fresh arrival from the neighbors of Finca Vista Hermosa! Although Finca Vista Hermosa is gone for the season, this coffee from neighboring small holders is pretty similar. A wonderful treat for any Guatemalan coffee fan.
This isn’t just a community lot. It’s a testament to Finca Vista Hermosa’s humble beginnings and a round of applause to the neighbors who helped them get to where they are today. It began with cultivating coffee in San Pedro Necta in the 1950s. Over the coming decades the mountainsides surrounding Edwin’s family farm transformed, dirt roads cutting through ridges as coffee cultivation took hold. They first began exporting coffee from Finca Vista Hermosa to the US, their neighbors harvested some of the first single farm lots they shared with roasters. Their cheerful delivery driver Robin Gutierrez grew coffee on the small lots surrounding his home. The Mayan teacher Gabino Mendez came down from the ridge just above our farm with the most delicious samples to cup with them. Soon the word spread, and we were working with neighbors all over the valley. As we’ve matured, we’ve realized that in order to sustainably bring in legacy single farm lots that aren’t significantly differentiated from one another in quality or profile, we’d have to shift our approach. We created Los Vecinos to deepen partnerships with these smallholder producers on their consistent 85 point main lots, while maintaining traceability. Coffees from three key producers comprise this traceable community blend, all traditional Bourbon and Caturra varieties grown between 1500-1700 MASL. Los Vecinos tastes like deep chocolate with that classic Huehue orange and berry acidity, a satisfying milky-creamy mouthfeel, sweetness throughout, and a toasted nut finish.
Tasting Notes:
Smooth, rich, delicate and clean, a wonderful example of a top notch Guatemalan. The aroma has great sweet notes. Hazel and hickory nuts, caramel, and milk chocolate. The body is light/medium and has a very silky texture on the malty side. The aroma comes through in the taste to create a wonderful balance of tones. Medium to low acidity, reduces the darker you roast. The finish is very smooth and clean with a lingering sweetness.
Roasting Notes:
From light to dark a very tasty cup of coffee. Lighter roast will have more winy acidity but add some soft fruit to the cup, before 2nd crack roasts will be smooth and delicate, dark roasts will be strong and semi-sweet with added smoky tones.
