Medium to dark roast coffee, this cup has a little crisp floral acidity and soft fruit tones mixing into a fuller bodied nutty and chocolaty undertone. Similar to the washed processed but with hint of floral and fruit. Not an overly fruity natural like some. Light roast themselves can come off a bit dry and acidic but smooths out and becomes nice and defined at the medium roast level. Very tasty a bit darker as well, hefty and full bodied with a sweet edge.

We have been waiting forever for our lovely Maui coffee! As many who follow our newsletters know, Maui confirmed at the start of the season that they did have a little coffee, then went to not having enough coffee. We were a bit bummed to say the least!

Luckily half way through the season they were able to break us off a chunk, always good to play nice so folks think of you when they have something special.

Maui Kaanpali Estate is a unique Hawaiian coffee.  The beans are grown by MauiGrown Coffee at Ka‘anapali Estate in the West Maui highlands.

The 500-acre estate is a former State/private project that used coffee to diversify Maui’s sugar plantations.  It performed extensive field trials to find Arabicas that grow best in the soil, altitude and climate, while providing the best cup quality and yields.  MauiGrown grows the 4 best Arabica types from those field trials: Maui Mokka, Yellow Caturra, Red Catuai, and Typica.

Roasting Notes:
This is interesting coffee by itself but one of my favorite blend components. If you are into espresso and like Hawaii – this is a perfect blend base.  I would shoot for right before the second crack – will give you a very smooth cup – lower acidity with a very floral aroma; accentuating the dark malt and chocolate tones. Medium roasts are best for a single origin drinker, very sweet with some soft fruit and a malty undertone.

I found it tastes good by itself but was even better when I mixed it with some Mexican Chiapas. Will try it with some Colombian El Cortijo and Venicia next.
