Indian Mysore Nuggets – Extra Bold

(16 customer reviews)

Indian Mysore Nuggets has been a favorite of Burman Coffee and customers for many years and this crop does not disappoint. The aroma is nutty, woody, and some slight smokiness. Many of the notes in the aroma come through in the flavor like walnuts and some smoke. There’s dark fruit, oak, licorice, and some vanilla spice, like a good dry red wine. The finish has a subdued brightness to it with just hints of lemon zest at lighter roast points. The body is medium to full depending on roast and brew. There’s a reason people keep coming back to this bean. It’s a smooth all around great stronger cup of coffee.

Description

Year in to year out, this is always one of our most popular coffees, at times we have trouble keeping it in stock!

Mysore coffees are the best known and the most popular of all Indian coffees, they possess good body and snappy acidity. The overall taste profile is very unique, with spicy overtones. These spicy overtones come from the cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves and pepper that grow alongside the coffee trees.

India Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold is sourced from several family-owned farms from the Chikmagalur District in Karnataka, India. Many of the farms have been in operation for close to one hundred years, passed down through the family from one generation to the next. Our Mysore Extra Bold is a fully washed coffee cultivated above 1,200 meters.

This lot is full bodied, with a rich full taste and moderate acidity. Very interesting and exotic, I like to roast this coffee a little darker, just into the second crack.

Roasting Notes:
We recommend roasting this bean a bit darker, strong medium to traditional dark roasts. Too light and the brightness is too dominant and the boldness not developed enough.

Regional Details

If you think coffee from India sounds uncommon, wait until you hear about the Western Ghats mountain range where this coffee was cultivated.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse places in the world with more than 5,000 species of flowering plants and 508 different species of birds.  The Neelakurinji flower is so uncommon that  it only blooms every twelve years.  And the legends say that the Western Ghats mountain range is the location where the first cultivated coffee in India arrived, from seven raw beans brought from Mocha by a Sufi saint on a pilgrimage to Mecca in the 17th century.

Sourcing Details

This lot comes from an estate in the Somwarpet region, which has 330 acres cultivated with coffee, oranges and peppers.  The estate has its own mill where coffee cherries are sorted, depulped, fermented, washed and then dried on patios.

Excellent flavor. Brought roast just into second crack. Definitely one of my favorites to keep on hand.

  2. Kayla H. (verified owner)

By and large, one of my favorite beans! I do a little happy dance when I receive them in the mail. I like to roast right at second crack. It makes for a delightfully rich cup with some subtle spicy undertones.

  3. Bill (verified owner)

Probably my favorite. I generally stick to Central American coffees but after roasting a few batches I love its full body and low acidity. I use a FR bottom of the line with the extended tower and can roast about 5 scoops. A heavier bean you have to roast carefully to keep the agitation consistent. Tastes like coffee used to taste 25 yrs ago. Thank you for stocking it.

  4. jessedschu (verified owner)

This is a very strong coffee, in a good way. Heavy body, lingering aftertaste. I like it best 5 seconds into second crack, which is unusual for me, because I tend to like lighter roasts. If you are a new roaster, buy this coffee! It is very easy to roast! It can take a ton of heat, and both cracks are very audible.

My wife loves the darker roasts so that the way I roasted these beans just into the 2nd crack. Beautiful dark chocolate with a sweet complex finish. We will be ordering more!

The green coffee we had been getting lately from another supplier had all been a little too similar and very mild/flat tasting. I ordered this along with a few others and I am glad I did. Finally a really bold flavor! I roast only for espresso and am not a fan of single origin so I blend 3 or more beans each time I roast. I have now made 3 different blends with the Mysore Nuggets and all of them have been amazing. This mornings shots were a 6 bean blend with all but one sourced here and it ranks up there with some of the best I have ever roasted. Even my wife commented on how good it was and that is rare!

We’ve been dropping just before 2nd crack. Rich and full mouthfeel. Definitely Bold! My fellow roasters really enjoy this cup and I will be bringing more to my customers! I wish I found the Mysore earlier!

  8. David Mitchell (verified owner)

Silky smooth incredibly balanced coffee. This could be one of the best coffees I’ve ever had. Roasted it just into second crack. Drank a cup the following day. It’s probably even better after a few days rest.

I first ordered this for a friend who likes his coffee extra dark. I roasted it well into Vienna territory. On sampling I was amazed at how well balanced it was and with no bitterness at all. I now roast this bean 30 seconds into 2nd crack. The more I roast, the more it has grown on me. If you enjoy a darker roast you will never go wrong with these beans. No, the name isn’t the most attractive but it’s superb flavor profile will more than make up for it. I couldn’t recommend this more.

  10. Jeff (verified owner)

This turned out really easy for a beginner roaster like me to handle. Like most everyone else here, roasted 2C and pulled for rapid cooling. Finally sampled some and it turned out better then anticipated. Dark, smooth and complex. Sending out lots of xmas gifts this year and buying some more for myself!

I roast my Mysore Nuggets fifteen seconds into the second crack and mix 2/3 nuggets with 1/3 Monsooned Malabar. For me, it’s the perfect dark rich flavor profile.

  12. evanoz85 (verified owner)

Third time purchasing 5lbs of this from here. I drop them about 5 seconds into second crack on my Aillio Bullet. Provides an amazing contrast to my usual single origin light roasts when I want something more classic and robust. Works well for both filter and single-origin espresso.

  13. Mathew Gunter (verified owner)

I think it is wonderful,my favorite so far. For me roasted a few seconds into audible second crack. Some could like it better just at the second crack.

  14. Rushad Daruwala

Roasted in an air roaster just before second crack. Smooth and bold with very little acidity. Very versatile, as a hot or cold brew. Even pairs well with milk or flavored creamers.

  15. Rick Brooks (verified owner)

I am pleasantly surprised at this bean since I’m usually a fan of naturals and not washed. This one has rich, full, smooth flavor roasted just to 2c on my Fresh Roast 800 with Razzo extended chamber. I would buy this one again. In fact all the varieties I got from Burman was exceptional. Other suppliers this year seem to have flatter, less than flavorful, coffees than usual.

  16. fafow72 (verified owner)

I have an SR 800 and have been using it for a number of years. I sell to a very small group of friends, all but 1 insists on Mysore. I got one person to try a Mandheling (I much prefer that). They tried it and went right back to the Mysore. I have on person that has me do an 80/20 mix with Indian Robusta. In my opinion, it’s a good coffee but definitely not a favorite of mine. (It is, however a favorite of my buyers). I roast this into the very beginning of rolling 2C.
