Description
Colombian BCT Select is a coffee that exquisitely embodies the classic Colombian profile: a clean, balanced cup that is remarkably versatile in roasting. It originates from small-scale producers belonging to coffee-growing communities across Colombia, where the coffee is typically cultivated, harvested, and processed on family-run farms. For lots of this type, the producers’ efforts are complemented by a support network comprising regional cooperatives and the National Federation of Coffee Growers entities that provide assistance with logistics, storage, technical support, and market access.
This particular lot is prepared in the Excelso EP style. The term “Excelso” does not designate a specific variety, but rather a traditional classification of Colombian coffee based on bean size, intended for export purposes; meanwhile, “EP” stands for “European Preparation” a more meticulous sorting process designed to eliminate defects and impurities, thereby ensuring a more uniform appearance and a cleaner cup.
In Colombia, a significant portion of the coffee harvest originates from small family farms, and many of these families receive guidance and support through sustainability and rural extension programs aimed at improving productivity, profitability, and the responsible management of natural resources. The National Federation of Coffee Growers describes its sustainability strategy as a concerted effort to ensure that coffee farming remains profitable for families while simultaneously preserving natural resources; furthermore, its Extension Service acts as a direct liaison with producers, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and best practices.
Tasting Notes: A pleasant, clean cup, full of flavor across the entire roast spectrum from medium to dark. Possessing a fuller body, it presents a pleasing acidity and a classic Colombian profile. Soft citrus notes reminiscent of orange and lemon, and perhaps with a slight floral nuance blend with sweet milk chocolate and subtle hints of hazelnut. Lighter roasts can be a bit brighter, with the citrus notes taking center stage. Medium roasts offer the best balance, highlighting sweeter chocolate notes, a light nutty touch, and a smooth finish. Darker roasts intensify the semi-sweet chocolate nuances, harmonizing perfectly with the fuller body and creamy mouthfeel.
Roasting Notes: An easy-to-roast coffee that is extremely versatile across a wide spectrum of roast levels. Lighter roasts exhibit greater citrus brightness and a cleaner cup, though a brief period of additional rest can help soften the acidity. Medium roasts provided the ideal balance and proved to be our favorite roast point, enhancing the milk chocolate, soft nutty nuances, and delicate citrus touches. Medium-dark and dark roasts steer the cup toward deeper chocolate notes, offering a rounder, richer finish.
