Description
Very seldom do we see coffees this special but boy, what a price tag to follow. All in all, there are worse ways to spend your money than on a super unique crazy high rated pound of coffee. Here at Burman Coffee, we are always looking for a deal, even on coffees this special.
Geisha coffee is a unique single strain that has been dominating the coffee competitions and top cups as of late. One just took the place of the worlds most expensive coffee from the recent Best of Panama competition going for over $2300/lb! Common for top grades out of Panama (not that competition winner) to sell in the $40-$80/lb range. So all in all, this lot is expensive but still a great bang for the buck for the class of bean.
Panama is quickly turning into the worlds most cutting edge coffee producing nation. Bringing coffee growing to a whole new level. While popularizing single strains like Geisha and Mokka along with dialing in hybrid controlled fermentation processing. A whole new world of coffee. Many Panamanian farmers found it very hard to compete price and volume wise with the neighbor countries so they decided to go boutique and high quality to save the industry in Panama, boy has it worked. Panama coffees now demand the highest prices and are often rated some of the highest in the world.
Like many of the Panama farms we carry, La Milagrosa is in the heart of the prime growing region. North West Panama, near to the mountain range and the Volcano Baru, in the District of Boquete, Province of Chiriquí. This place is popular for eco-tourism and the production of the highland coffee. Finca La Milagros is at 1600 meters above sea level, which means very high altitude coffee.
Tasting Notes: Best at a light roast, almost a shame to take any darker. Very clean and balanced, even if you traditionally do not like light roasts, this one might impress. An amazing Geisha Natural, the tastes of these beans hit the nail on the head for what a stellar Geisha should taste like. Jasmine like aromatics, sweet overly floral tones with a hint of citric balancing with a little soft fruit and black tea like spice. Great depth of flavor, one can see why Geisha coffees are often all the top coffees in the competitions with a cup like this. One can mellow out a little acidity by pushing into the medium roast range, still tasty but be warned it will mute many of the overly floral and fruity tones. It will be bit less acidic and more tea like.
Roasting Notes: Keep this light roasted. Not just your “normal” light roast, but right as you hear first crack subsiding, or just finishing, hit cool right away. You will still see some splotchy two toned color on each bean but this is okay. 99% of coffees do not taste that great here, but exceptional very highly rated coffee will. Keep in mind, this cup is about the overly floral, fruity and brighter tones. If that doesn’t sound tasty, we might recommend other Panama offerings versus taking this one darker. Setup time is important, tastes great within 24 hours, but day 3-4 was our favorite, may be worth waiting if you can!
