Guatemalan Quetzaltenango Org. – El Vergel Estate – Geisha Washed

(1 customer review)

A very floral cup of coffee! Light to medium roasts are where it shines. Light roasts themselves are pretty lemony floral and bright, a little heavier body and balance with a more herbal/malty undertone. Tasty and lets you see the more floral geisha attributes nicely but a bit sharp and dry in the finish, a front loaded cup most would call it. Medium roasts develop the tastes better but mute some of those crazy floral tones, tastes more like a higher acidity Guatemalan. Good malty-ness with crisp overly floral tones. Much cleaner cup at a medium roast. Dark roasts worked well but were hard to tell anything Geisha like about the cup. Similar to other high end Guat offerings, stronger with malty and smoky compliments.

Description

Good news- we found one more 30 kilo bag hiding in our warehouse! A very fun and tasty offering at a crazy steal of a price. These days, slap Geisha on something and it sells for crazy money. This is the Geisha strain but on young trees and done as an experiment to possible cultivate Geisha throughout the co-op. A very clean and tasty cup, but will not scream Geisha like some we have had. The co-op passed on this small lot at a steal to one of our sourcing buddies, more as an evaluation “sample” for future crops, we couldn’t help but to grab it.

Federación Comercializadora de Café Especial de Guatemala (FECCEG) is an umbrella organization that represents a number of different smallholder farmer organizations across Guatemala. FECCEG provides centralized milling, marketing, and exportation services on behalf of associations, and we purchase a variety of coffees from within their network each year, from large FTO certified blends all the way down to single-farm, single-variety lots for special release.

FECCEG also, since 2013, has been operating an experimental coffee estate of their own, meant to showcase the potential of organic farming and be a knowledge resource for the grower associations they represent, as well as a unique revenue stream, and overall passion project for everyone involved. “El Vergel” is the name of the estate, a 24.4-hectare blend of common and exotic arabica cultivars, all planted in under ample shade and alongside lemon verbena, banana, bamboo, taro, and grazing wool sheep.

The property was first acquired in 2013 and is today producing 500 quintales of parchment, about one container of exportable coffee. The largest 2 coffee parcels on the farm are caturra and geisha. Fully washed coffees at El Vergel are inspected carefully prior to depulping, to eliminate as many visual and ripeness inconsistencies as possible. Depulping itself takes place on a Penagos machine, a water-efficient device that uses traditional pulping and friction to loosen a coffee’s mucilage prior to fermentation.

Coffee then ferments in concrete tanks for 15-24 hours and is washed clean with spring water (El Vergel contains 4 natural springs on site). Drying takes place using a combination of mobile raised panels and solar dryer. Once drying is complete, the finished parchment is taken to FECCEG’s local storage facility, where it is coded with delivery day and with individual numbers for each sack. As with all their various coffees entering dry milling, a sample of each delivery is extracted prior to milling for quality analysis. FECCEG employs 15 individuals year-round for estate management, and dozens of others for seasonal labor during harvest.

In addition to coffee production, their ongoing programs at El Vergel include organic compost, test areas for organic inputs, demonstration areas and programs for other producers to interact with, and evaluation sites for experimental cultivars.

Tasting Notes: A very floral cup of coffee! Light to medium roasts are where it shines. Roasting Notes: Easy to roast, would shoot for a nice medium roast to start and adjust to personal taste preference. Definitely give it a couple days setup before drinking, being higher acidity and sharp, it needs a little more time to rest than most. Will darken up in color pretty quickly, so looks a shade darker than it is, still a bit splotchy on a single bean at lighter roasts.

This is a very, very nice cup of coffee for my tastes. Guatemalan coffee was the first purchase I made years ago that opened my world to specialty coffees, from a local roaster. I have a special place in my heart for a good Guat, but this is a very unique Geisha wash, something you don’t find often. Very lemony, it makes my mouth water as I drink it around a medium-light roast. As in the description, very front loaded, there’s no real aftertaste or lingering sort of body.

    Really nice, and organic!
