Description
4 Guatemalan COE winning lots this season! Our buying group with Finca Vista Hermosa was the only US auction winners this year. Almost everything went overseas into the Asian markets. We feel honored to offer some of the best beans in the world! (or at least Guatemala in this case).
The Villatoro family has done it again. A wonderful award winning lot from one of our favorite Guatemalan coffee families. Took 28th place this year with this Maragogype Washed. Check it out here.
87.3 points in the COE is crazy, some of the toughest grading on the block. Highest scoring lot was 91.75 and it went for over $138/Lb.
A wonderful chance to literally try, some of the best coffee in the world. 245 pounds to go around.
I always love Maragogype beans, giant beans! This is the original large bean strain out of Central America. Crossed with Pacas, to create Pacamara, which is also one of my favorite strains. Super tasty coffees but seldom award winners, this is a super rare gem. The only Maragogype to win the COE in quite some time.
Farm Bio:
Mr. Florencio Villatoro began working with his father Eleodoro de Jesús Villatoro (founder of Finca La Esperanza) when he was fifteen years old and at the age of 20 he started his farm in 1986.
He started making his Almacigo to sell and get some money to be able to plant his first coffee plants on his first piece of land. He worked for 4 years to be able to start producing in the first batch of 45 cuerdas (1.9 hectares).
The name of the Diamond: It arises given the importance of the land for Florencio, he suffered a lot to obtain his farm with many years of hard work. His farm is a treasure for him and everything he has been able to achieve. The farm has varieties: Caturra, bourbon and maragogype at altitudes ranging from 1550 to 1850 meters above sea level.
Tasting Notes:
This is the sizzling, very bright offering out of all the COE coffees, crazy being a Maragogype offering. Almost all the others I have tried over the years were low acidity and bolder coffees, very cool to see a stellar one. Definitely a cup to remember. Floral and lemon will hit you over the head at light roasts. Very sweet cup with some fruity character within the brighter more citric cup profile. Incredibly clean cup which will pull some balance and clear tones at lighter than normal roast points. Similar to the Pacamara, some tea like spicy dark tones in the aftertaste, medium bodied with great mouthfeel. This cup is highly rated for it’s floral/citric/fruity front end, rare attributes and strong enough to not burn out at fuller roasts. Making this cup very tasty and unique from light to dark.
COE Judge Notes:
Caramel, Floral, Honey, Bright, Citrus, Fruits, Grapes, Green apple, Creamy, Caramel, Chocolate, Grapefruit, Hibiscus rose, Honey, Intense, Jasmine, Tangerine, Orange, Peach, Red wine, Vanilla, Juicy, Complex, Black tea, Berries, Red apple, Green apple, Mango, Kiwi, Nougat, Cherry, Chamomile, Hazelnut
Roasting Notes:
Very large beans, medium chaff, even roasting. Due to the large beans, we do recommend reducing the batch size just a pinch in air roasters, help it move a little better. Drum roasters will see minimal difference with the beans size. If you like brightness, end this one right at first crack is subsiding, if you want a little smoother cup, slightly less blasty, go just a shade or two past first crack. Definitely one to keep closer to 1st crack than second, although similar to the Pacamara, cup will taste good darker roasted, but close to 2nd crack or into it, a ton of what makes this cup special will be lost. 3-5 day setup time to see these beans at their best.
