Description
A great super clean Decaf Brazil. Hard to tell this one is a decaf!
This Brazil has a nutty and fruity aroma. Medium bodied with a dark chocolate and dryer nuttiness. A smooth, rich, clean cup perfect for those decaf espresso drinks.
Many use more neutral beans like this to create a house blend. Easily adopts anything blended into it. If looking for a half-calf, roast this one a bit darker and find a jazzy caffeinated to blend with it. We like Natural processed ferment/fruity coffees in smaller percentages to contrast the darker Brazil tones. Something like Ethiopian Natural processed would make a tasty treat.
During the MWP (mountain water process), the green coffee is pre-soaked in water to expand the beans for caffeine extraction. The hydrated green coffee is then introduced to a unique solution of concentrated coffee solubles that draw out the caffeine while minimizing the loss of flavor compounds. Once the caffeine has been removed the green coffee is re-dried and re-bagged for transport, and the extract solution is filtered of its caffeine and recycled to be used again.
Tasting Notes:Great as a single origin Americana or Espresso, also works well in decaf espresso blends. Medium bodied, semi-sweet with fruitier aromatics and a dryer chocolaty/nutty undertone. Medium roasts are very smooth with a hint of sweetness, darker roasts are dryer with some smokiness.
Roasting Notes:I found this coffee best roasted to a full city, just before the second crack. It is versatile, could be taken lighter or darker depending on your preference

Really good coffee ignoring the fact that it is decaffeinated. Considering that it’s decaffeinated then it becomes unbelievably good since decaf tends to be in a different league than caffeinated beans. Not in this case however. This is an extremely drinkable cup with a sophisticated palette and pleasant aftertaste. It also doesn’t give me a migraine unlike decaffeinated beans using ethyl acetate as opposed to MWP.

By far, my favorite! Especially when roasted between 16-18% loss. I like a good dark roast and this one has such good body and taste. I get a chocolatey taste and maybe the smokiness as described but my palette isn’t as sensitive as I would like.

This bean tastes so bad to me that I reached out to Burman support to see if other people had also complained and let them know that I was worried something was wrong with this bean. They told me they have heard no other complaints about it, and thought pretty standard Brazilian tastes, nutty, semi-sweet, which does describe the other Brazil decafs I’ve ordered from t hem in the past, but not this lot. I normally love a good Brazil decaf, and I placed four separate orders with decaf Brazil from Burman in 2004, including both their Decaffeinated Brazil Mogiana – Royal Select MWP and the Decaffeinated Brazil Mogiana 15/16 – Royal Select SWP. I absolutely loved those decaf Brazilian orders. This tastes radically different to me than the other decaf Brazil orders I’ve made, every single cup has a bad astringent taste. I’ve tried roasting it several times, aiming for medium, medium-dark and dark roast over the past month hoping it was user error on my side, but over the last few batches, it doesn’t matter if I wait 3 days or 21, it doesn’t matter if I try espresso, pour over or french press, I cannot make a cup of coffee with this that is better than bad. I’ve ordered over a dozen lots of South American decafs from Burman over the years, and this is the only major disappointment, their other SWP and MWP Americas coffees have always been good to great in the past.
