Mexican Terruño Nayarita – Altamirano Family – Reserva Natural

A stellar light to medium roast coffee, one of the better batches of Terruno Natural we have had through our doors. Due to the processing this coffee is naturally very sweet, syrupy textured with a medium-full body. Its brightness leans toward citrus, more lemon than acidic lime, with nuances of apple and soft orange. The cup presents notes of peach, plum, and a light floral touch, with a background of chocolate and cocoa and soft undertones of caramel and vanilla. A subtle melon accent is noticeable, especially in lighter roasts. With an intense fruity note, yet firm and balanced; lively without being strident: ideal for everyday drinking with any brewing method.

Description

This is a natural processed micro-lot, which is very unique for Mexico. The bulk of Mexican coffee is washed processed. Natural processing gives much sweeter and fruitier characteristics, generally being higher chaff and slightly more uneven roasting. This lot has great fruity notes and a syrupy touch, coming from the Altamirano Family, part of the Terruño Nayarita Group (GTN), and was isolated as a “Reserve Patio-select”: a single picking lot with exceptional sensory characteristics, packaged in special 30 kg bags to highlight its traceability and unique profile. In the cup, the Manzana lot presents nuances of apple and citrus, caramel and vanilla, and ripe plum and peach, with a chocolatey base and a honeyed, syrupy texture. Within Nayarit’s coffee corridor, communities like El Cuarenteño (in the foothills of the Sierra de San Juan, west of Tepic) are home to small producers who specialize in natural patio coffees with high sweetness, fruity nuances, and a chocolatey undertone the very hallmark seen in this microlot produced by the Altamirano family.

The vertical grouping of local and democratic coffee-growing societies in the state of Nayarit, a coastal and mountainous strip of volcanic soils and microclimates that favor specialty coffees. Gathered around an extinct volcano, Cerro San Juan, a committed group of 260 cooperative coffee growers works together to produce arguably the best coffee in Mexico. Terruño Nayarita coffees come from ancient trees. The word “Terruño” means “farm.” These coffee growers take pride in their coffee. This is the best shade-growing coffee size/grade from the Terruño Nayarit Cooperative. San Cristóbal Coffee Importers strive to source and produce excellent coffee, ensuring that coffee growers use safe and sustainable shading techniques and offer fair wages to their workers. International marketing is handled by San Cristóbal Coffee Importers, which has implemented 100% traceability since 2006 with barcodes/QR codes linked to its TrackYourCoffee platform, which is key for Patio Select batches like this one.

Roasting Notes: Works well from light to medium. Light roasts bring the most vibrant citrus/apple notes, the floral note, and that hint of melon; a brief rest after roasting helps the caramel emerge. Medium is the crowd-pleasing sweet spot: honey/molasses sweetness, peach/plum depth, and a more pronounced chocolate core, while retaining measured acidity. Push toward, but not to, the second crack for semisweet chocolate, very low acidity, a creamy mouthfeel, and a hint of spice; expect the fruity/floral tones to recede as the body and chocolate advance.
