Description
2 Guatemalan COE winning lots this season! Our buying group with Finca Vista Hermosa was the only US auction winners this year. Almost everything went overseas into the Asian markets. We feel honored to offer some of the best beans in the world! (or at least Guatemala in this case).
The Villatoro family has done it again. A wonderful award winning lot from one of our favorite Guatemalan coffee families. Took 16th place this year with this Gesha Natural. Check it out here.
87.88 points in the COE is crazy, some of the toughest grading on the block. Highest scoring lot was 91.13 and it went for over $131/Lb!
A wonderful chance to literally drink, some of the best Guatemalan coffee in the world!
History of the farm:
Arcenio Castillo Villatoro has been working in coffee since he was 10 years old started to help to his father, Felino Castillo, grow and process coffee. When he was 18 years old his father gave a small plot of coffee which he cultivated for several years.
His dream was to expand his small plot and this is why he emigrated to the USA. Years later all that efforts have good results and his dream became true.
That dream has a name and its called Bella Vista. Now, they have a lot of Coffee process such as washed, natural, drying beds, and anaerobic.
Together with his wife, Rosa Lopez and their 3 children work very hard in the farm and all that effort has paid off.
Tasting Notes:
Super clean, delicate and sweet, this is definitely one for you fruit forward fans and best served at the light-medium roast level. Hints of citric winy acidity upfront comingle with tons of floral and red fruit. Just the tiniest hint of a darker spice note. The aromatics hit you before the wonderful taste even hits the tongue, lets you know you have something special; jasmine and sweet, slightly fruity notes with some spice. Something only a stellar Gesha or Ethiopian can provide.
Roasting Notes:
We found a quicker roast just through first crack presented the cup very nicely. Give it a little setup to get the more complex character. Roasts just a hint two toned but will not create any challenges, so expect a couple late 1st cracks. Beans darken up quickly so watch for the expansion in size. Surface of the beans will still be a bit splotchy at the light roast levels. Higher chaff.

My wife and I are not fans of this one for a single origin cup. Maybe to delicate a taste for us. Definitely different in flavor. Roasted to full city as suggested. Disappointed considering the price. Perhaps we’re still not coffee snub enough but we like a bolder cup.

Sorry you did not like this one and for the confusion!
This is a very light roast coffee, it’s an amazing clean, very fruity and floral cup. Roast levels past a light/medium (city+ or further) will be pretty non-descript. Easy to roast the uniqueness out of these beans.
It is a pretty fruity coffee, which is achieved through fermentation in the coffee fruit itself (natural processing), this can be hit or miss on the taste buds. Some love them, some do not.

On second thought, please let me humble myself after my initial review. I made a mocha pot this morning with 1 scoop of lot #16, and 1 scoop of Bolivia Apolo and a smidge of Colombia Supreme. Now I get it! A truly first class cup of coffee, indeed. Nix the first review.

The roasting notes are spot on. Using a Behmor 2000AB+, I used the preset P1 setting to roast it high and fast, then to manual P3 at the beginning of first crack. Even after just one day of resting, I have a smooth, fruity coffee that is perfect for the French press. Exceptional cup!

It’ll ruin you for life. You will forever be on the search for another like this one. Truly one of the finer coffees out there! Roast it fast and keep it light if you want to get the best out of it! Just into first crack is where I like it. Don’t wait too long to drink it or you’ll miss the best part of it! Doesn’t need more than only a day of set up time.
