“Masala Chai” Flavored Black Tea

Recently making a big splash in the US, this concoction alters the traditional flavors slightly to cater to more Western tastes, with a focus on ginger, cinnamon and vanilla. The aromas wafting out of this cup are fantastic, spicy enough to wake you up before you even take a sip.

Traditionally boiled in huge metal kettles with whole milk and loads of sugar, chai is poured from high up to aerate and cool it, served in tiny glasses or clay bowls with a pinch of fresh roasted spices, and enjoyed frequently throughout the day.

“Masala Chai” simply means “mixed-spice tea,” and across North India it can be found in countless local secret-recipe variations. Read more, and try our BCT family recipe for an authentic “chai masala” to sprinkle on top.

Black tea, ginger root, cinnamon, green cardamom, ginger and vanilla flavors

Assam: Sessa Estate’s “Best & Finest” Black Tea

Further from ports than the more famous micro-regions of Darjeeling and Sikkim, the low-lying state of Assam is less well-known in the US. However, its tea tradition is unrivaled – it is the origin of Camellia sinensis var. assamica, the sub-species of tea which was cultivated on enormous plantations by the British in the second half of the 19th century, not only in India but also Sri Lanka and Kenya, and now supplies most of the world’s black tea.  Read more about the history and climate of Assam on the product page.

Assam is full of tea estates; Sessa is known as one of the best, receiving excellence awards from the Tea Board of India. This selection is their top lot, a beautiful tippy assamica, very small whole leaves tinged with orange. The liquor produced is also a pleasing warm orange color, with malty aroma reminiscent of fresh baked croissants. Overall relatively mild in flavor, this is an exceedingly refined Assamese tea, with a perfect dryness that lingers on the palate after the initial sweet and malty flavors fade. Detectable in this delicate astringency are grapefruit and almond notes, but mostly you will be charmed by the up-front molasses sweetness and silky malty body of this flawless second flush tippy black tea.

Holy Detox Healing Blend Herbal Infusion

Who knew that medicine could be so delicious? Tulsi, or Holy Basil, has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine as a powerful immune-booster and “adaptogen” – helping the body adapt to stress, imbalance, and seasonal changes – and is used in many different forms as a daily health supplement. Combined with cooling spearmint, it presents a sweetly spicy flavor profile as it eases digestion and uplifts the spirits. Rosehips, linden blossoms, and lemon myrtle also contribute to the anti-inflammatory detoxifying attributes of this health tonic and add subtle floral notes to the cup. Holy Detox is especially helpful when recovering from a cold, flu, or seasonal depression.

Healing herbs are best steeped long and strong, so we recommend using 1-2 tablespoons of herbs per serving, and steeping for 10 minutes. If you like an even stronger cup, feel free to add more herbs and steep up to 20 minutes.  Read more about all herbs in this blend on the product page.

Steeping Time – 10 Minutes

Water Temp – 212 F

Tulsi (holy basil), spearmint, rosehips, lemon myrtle, linden blossoms
