Using your new Fresh Roast SR 500 home coffee roaster

The roaster has three parts, the chaff collector on top, the roasting chamber, and the heated base.

  1. Start with four level scoops of coffee. (The scoop is included!)
  2. Remove the chaff collector, add the coffee to the roasting chamber, and put the chaff collector back on.
  3. Set the timer for 6-10 minutes.
  4. We like to start the roast with the low temperature setting and the highest fan speed for the first two minutes than set the temperature to high.
  5. Hit the start button and began roasting.
  6. As the coffee starts turning over vigorously, turn the the fan speed down to build heat and keep the beans from chipping.
  7. If you want to stop the roast at any time, just hit the cool button. Don’t turn it to off, as the roaster is quite hot and needs the three minutes of cooling before being handled.
  8. If you see smoke coming from the roaster, you are getting to a dark roast and will want to think about hitting the cool button
  9. After the timer shuts off, remove the chaff collector, (be careful – as the roaster is still pretty warm) lift out the roast chamber by its handle, and dump the beans.

I like to store the freshly roasted beans in an open container for 2 to 3 days, then move them to a sealed container.

The only cleaning necessary is to dump out the chaff from the chaff collector and wipe the collector out, I use a small basting brush to clean it.

I’ve been using the SR500 for almost two years now and I love it. Much easier to get consistent roasts than using the hot air corn popper I used to use, and the SR500 is also less messy since it has a great chaff catcher. I drilled a hole in the top and put in a thermometer which allows me to control to temperature as well as time. I just broke the cover of the chaff catcher and was pleasantly surprised that replacement parts are very reasonable (and with Amazon Prime I had it in 2 days). One secret to help with roasting – I stir the beans or shake the roaster the first minute or so until the beans are circulating consistently (otherwise you can get a few overdone beans).

My wife and I started roasting coffee with a popcorn popper. After a few months of enjoying this new hobby we decided to step up to a true coffee roaster. The guys at Burman were most helpful in giving us the info we needed to make our decision. The SR500 is a great roaster and very easy to use. We get very consistent results with each batch and the taste of true home roasted coffee can’t be beat. We do 4 ounces, weighted on a kitchen scale, each time and roast in the garage with the door open for ventilation. It’s just that easy.

It does a good job with the roast, but black lid up top is very heavy and tends to fall off when you move roaster around. You should be aware of that. The lid does not attach securely to the glass cup. When it sits on countertop it works well, but when you need to move it to storage you have to be very careful with the top lid. It does balance well. Mine fell to the floor and got cracked.

I purchased this roaster as the staring point to a new hobby, which I’m really enjoying! Operation is very simple, and thus far, have not had anything but success.
I found that running my beans thru a drying process of LOW HEAT HIGH FAN for 1 minute with a 3 minute cool down, and repeating a 2nd time aids in beans circulating better and more consistent roast results. I use a high quality chef’s instant read thermometer inserted horizontally into a vent hole between the screen and top cover for temperature monitoring. No mods or drilling necessary. I have had excellent control and results, along with the ability to repeat or adjust my parameters. I keep a written log of every roast, noting details of every aspect. Time is monitored with a tablet placed next to the roaster in stopwatch mode for recording key points and temperatures. The only drawback is with some beans, 2nd crack may not be easy to hear with the fan noise. Overall it has performed very well as an entry level, but very good roaster. I’m already planning to purchase a much more sophisticated one, now that I am enjoying this hobby along with excellent results.
