Great balanced cup, lively acidity upfront at lighter roasts, very clean with a more chocolaty finish. Can be roasted from light to dark. The acidity is a bit citrus/floral, some soft islandy fruit tones can be found with lighter roasting, especially as the cup cools or the beans have a little longer setup time. From a medium roast on, the acidity is very gentle and balanced, cup is medium to full bodied with a smooth to rough chocolaty cup profile, milk chocolate before 2nd crack, bakers chocolate and smoky into 2nd crack.

New 2021/22 crop! A beautiful screen, one can tell quality by appearance in this case.

Hawaii has had a troubled couple of years – crops have been down huge, prices are sky rocketing, quality slipping, bad weather, volcanoes and hurricanes. The impact on many coffee lots from the islands can be seen in almost every lot, if one can even find them. Luckily we have some awesome friends at Greenwell and they hoarded the best of the best for us. A gem of a lot and very highly rated. Defect free, large beans and the only one to make an official Extra Fancy grade we have seen.

The Greenwell Farms legacy began in 1850 when Henry Nicholas Greenwell left England and first set foot on the fertile soil of rural Kona.

Greenwell farms is one of the biggest names in Kona coffee. This is their highest quality bean, a very large, clean, polished coffee with a flavor matching the looks.

Tasting Notes: Great balanced cup, lively acidity upfront at lighter roasts, very clean with a more chocolaty finish.

Roasting Notes: A quick & light roast will be pretty bright, if you are shooting for a lighter roast, good to slow down the roast a bit, get a little more development to the tones. Medium roasts were our favorite, gentle and sweet, a cup everyone will love. Darker roasts are a little bit of shame, burns out some cool islandy tones but makes the cup much stronger and a bit fuller bodied.

This is a great coffee! I had the privilege to visit the Greenwell Farms on the Big Island in 2018 but couldn’t pick up any green beans from them, so I think it is great that Burman is offering it. One thing about this coffee, you have to take it well into the second crack to unveil all the goodness in it. The flavors are so complex, there aren’t enough words to describe it! Roast it less and it is too grassy in my opinion. One thing about Kona coffees being so expensive they could disappoint, Lions Gate Farms would be an example of that, but Greenwell Farms is worth the price, at least when it comes to Kona coffees. The best quality of this coffee is the intense flavor profile at low acidity.

My favorite coffee. I’ve had many other “Kona” coffees but, Greenwell Farms Fancy is the absolute premium by far. My preferred roast profile is to warm the beans at low temp (to slightly lower the acidity in the finished cup) to Maillard, then boost the temp where I bring it to a medium roast just before the second crack to yield a medium acidity, somewhat floral, yet complex and well balanced cup. For anyone preferring a lower acidity cup with bold complex flavors, I would start at a higher heat and bring it into the second crack as another reviewer had mentioned. The bottom line is that this is a versatile coffee that anyone can enjoy.
