Yemen Mocca Sanani

$9.35

A great example of Yemeni coffee. Chocolaty and fruity, kind of a Mocca/Java blend as a single origin coffee. Medium bodied and clean enough to drink on the lighter side if you don’t mind a little lemony acidity and semi-earthy chocolate notes. Medium to just before 2nd crack is the sweet spot for balance, great developed chocolaty notes with some awesome red fruit highlights. Darker will also appease many but burned out a little too much sweetness and soft fruit to be the winning roast, strong spice chocolaty tones with a smoky accent.

Description

Been a long time since we offered a Yemen coffee – we love them incredibly but with the political battles and atrocities taking place we avoided them. Recently we have gotten into some good discussions with coffee folks and the recent thinking is, good to support these Yemen farmers regardless of what is politically happening in the country. Yemen does aggregate farming, small holders – they do not have traditional farms like we normally see. Traceability is hard on these coffees but we are good buddies with Royal Coffee and the Yemeni Importer has been good friends with Bob and Max for a long time. As vetted as we could get.

Part of what makes Yemen coffee so cool is shared with Ethiopia – these places are the original habitat for coffee, tons of undocumented strains and wild plants incorporate these beans (partly why they roast uneven). Be prepared for some flavors unique to Ethiopia and Yemen.

Yemen Mocca Sanani is sourced from family owned plots located throughout the western highlands of Yemen, adjacent to the Red Sea between the city of Ta’izz in the south and Sa’dah in the north.

Roasting Notes:
An old world natural processed bean. Will roast a bit uneven and be higher chaff. A nice screen with low defect count. If shooting for lighter roasts, make sure everything gets through first crack or risk a little grassy tones, if shooting for a darker roast, just a couple pops into 2nd crack will do it for most; take it just a couple more pops into 2nd if its still slightly too fruity.
